FUN FACTS ABOUT MITTENS

  • Some of the earliest identifiable mittens date to around 1000 A.D. in Latvia.
  • The word mitten comes from medietana, “divided in the middle” in Vulgar Latin.
  • Corded or “idiot” mittens are two mittens connected by a length of yarn, string or lace, threaded through the sleeves of a coat. It is typically provided for small children, but we all know someone who should have them attached.
  • “Mittens” is a Christmas song by Carly Rae Jepsen that reached number 26 on the Canadian Adult Contemporary chart in 2010.
  • The 1959 Rodgers and Hammerstein song “My Favorite Things”, from the musical The Sound of Music, includes the lyrics: “Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens/Bright copper kettles and warm woollen mittens”.
A promotion in 1963 encouraged mothers to get their children mittened up for winter and keep their cat happy too, with “3 Little Kittens” cat food.

FUN FACTS ON GLOVES

  • The History of Herodotus (440 BC) tells how Leotychides was incriminated by a glove (gauntlet) full of silver that he received as a bribe.
  • Gloves became fashionable for women starting the 16th century Europe. A trend started by Queen Catherine de Medici of France.
  • English gentlemen used to declare their love by sending gloves to their intended brides- they would know if the recipient accepted their marriage proposal if she wore them to church that Sunday.
  • Gloves were thrown down as a challenge.
  • The most expensive glove sold at auction sold for $420,000- the glove’s owner was Michael Jackson!
